Warranty Certificate
A warranty certificate is a promise with a start date, an end date and a serial number on it. It says which units are covered, for how long, against what, and what the holder has to do to keep the cover alive. Most of the value sits in the schedule rather than the paragraphs, because a certificate that names a model but not a serial cannot be matched to the unit standing in the plant room three years later.
The three dates are not the same date and mixing them up causes most warranty arguments. Manufacture, delivery and commissioning can be months apart, and a certificate that runs from delivery leaves an installer carrying the gap while equipment sits in a store. Recording the date of manufacture and the date each unit went into service, and stating which one the period runs from, settles the question before it becomes a dispute. Where units go into service in stages, as they do on a building handed over floor by floor, each unit ends up with its own end date and the schedule is the only place that record exists.
Cover and exclusions belong side by side, in the same plain wording. Parts, labour, travel, consumables, wear items and consequential loss are treated differently by almost every warranty, and a document that lists what is covered but hides the exclusions in a paragraph of small text is the one that gets read out in a complaint. The conditions matter just as much: servicing at the stated interval by a competent person, correct water treatment or power supply, records kept, and modifications approved. For consumer sales in the European Union a commercial guarantee like this sits on top of the buyer's statutory rights, which include a minimum two year liability for goods that do not conform, and it cannot cut those rights down. Between businesses the certificate is usually the whole of the promise, so the wording carries more weight.
This is the document class that most rewards generation from data. A manufacturer issues one for every unit that ships and an installer issues one for every project handed over, each with different serials, dates and durations, and the text between them barely changes. Holding one template and rendering it from the shipment or handover record produces a correct, individually serialised certificate per unit or per batch, which is exactly the work that stops being possible by hand at any real volume.
